World Bank Signals Strong Confidence in Nigeria’s Reform Drive After High-Level Talks with Wale Edun

Anna Bjerde commends Tinubu administration’s economic direction as both sides agree to deepen collaboration on power, agriculture, digital infrastructure and private sector investment.

Nigeria’s ongoing economic reform agenda received a fresh vote of global confidence this week as the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, held strategic discussions in Abuja with Anna Bjerde, Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank Group, and other senior officials.

The meeting, described as significant for Nigeria’s reform trajectory, reaffirmed what both parties termed a clear economic direction under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with growing optimism from international partners and markets regarding the country’s growth potential.

During the talks, Edun outlined the administration’s renewed focus on stimulating growth, attracting investment, and creating jobs through decisive policy actions across critical sectors.

He highlighted progress and momentum in efforts to expand reliable electricity supply, strengthen agricultural productivity, accelerate digital infrastructure, improve trade efficiency, and unlock private sector capital.

These areas, he noted, are central to building a more productive, competitive, and investment-friendly economy capable of supporting Nigeria’s large and growing population.

Nigeria also reiterated its leadership role in regional energy reform and its ambition to position itself as a key economic hub in West Africa, bolstered by Abuja’s status as the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In her remarks, Bjerde commended the Nigerian government’s clarity of purpose and reform commitment, noting that the progress being made is increasingly being recognised by international markets and development partners.

She reaffirmed the World Bank’s support for Nigeria’s investment-led growth strategy, with particular emphasis on infrastructure delivery and greater private sector participation in driving economic expansion.

Both sides agreed on the need to accelerate implementation of reform initiatives, attract capital at scale, and create sustainable opportunities for millions of Nigerians.

The engagement marks another milestone in Nigeria’s push for sustainable economic growth and signals strengthening global backing for the country’s reform programme as it seeks to play a more prominent role in regional and global markets.
