Nigeria’s Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator David Umahi, has sparked public debate following forceful comments made during a recent address to supporters in Ebonyi State, where he dismissed his critics and asserted that his political influence has significantly expanded since leaving office as governor.
Speaking at the gathering, Umahi urged his supporters to ignore what he described as “noise makers,” insisting that his current position at the federal level has elevated his relevance and authority beyond what it was during his time as governor.
“I am ten times bigger now than I was when I was governor. I am very dangerous now; nobody should fall on me,” the minister said, drawing strong reactions across political circles.
Providing further context to his remarks, Umahi also spoke about his personal and family capacity, stating that divine blessings have placed his family in a position of strength. “God has blessed the Umahi family beyond wealth, and we are capable of funding anything,” he added.
Umahi, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) while serving as governor, has remained a prominent political figure in the South-East. Since his appointment as Minister of Works by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he has overseen major federal infrastructure projects, further solidifying his standing within the ruling party.
The comments have since generated mixed reactions, with supporters interpreting them as expressions of confidence, while critics argue that the language was provocative and unnecessary in an already tense political climate.
