Tinubu Celebrates Pate, Makanju Over Devex Power 50 Recognition
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Prof. Muhammed Ali Pate and A
nna Adeola Makanju following their inclusion on the Devex Power 50 List for 2026 — an annual ranking of the world’s most influential voices in global development.
Prof. Pate, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, and Makanju, Vice President for Global Impact at OpenAI, were selected alongside 48 other global figures, including Ghana’s President John Mahama, for their roles in shaping development policy and innovation worldwide.
In a statement issued by the State House, President Tinubu described the recognition as well deserved, noting that both Nigerians have continued to demonstrate excellence and leadership on the global stage.
“By their nomination, Pate and Makanju have made Nigeria proud. The honour is another testament to the infinite talents and potentials that abound in Nigeria and among Diaspora Nigerians,” the President said.
The Devex Power 50 list highlights individuals, organisations, and initiatives redefining how global development challenges are addressed across health, technology, governance, and policy.
Prof. Pate earned his place on the list for his strong advocacy for improved healthcare access in Nigeria and across Africa, particularly his push for domestic production of health commodities. A former Global Director for Health, Nutrition and Population at the World Bank, Pate is also recognised for championing reforms in the global health architecture.
Devex noted that his work has positioned him as one of the most recognised health ministers not only in Africa but globally.
Makanju, on the other hand, was recognised for her influence in shaping the governance and deployment of artificial intelligence at a global level. At OpenAI, she leads global engagement with governments and policymakers, helping design early guardrails for AI use while advising leaders on balancing innovation with public safety.
She previously served as Special Adviser to former U.S. President Joe Biden.
“She is leading OpenAI’s global outreach to governments, helping draft the first wave of AI guardrails and advising leaders on how to balance innovation with public safety,” Devex stated.
President Tinubu urged both honourees to continue striving for excellence and to deepen their contributions toward global development.
