A suspected cult clash in the Ilese area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has resulted in the deaths of a police officer and an unidentified civilian, Vanguard reports.
According to a community source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the clash occurred on Saturday night when suspected cultists stormed the area and began shooting sporadically.
“Tragedy struck last night around 10 p.m. at Ilese via Ijebu-Ode, as two individuals were killed in a suspected cult clash between Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
“One of the victims is a police officer serving at Obalende Division, Ijebu-Ode, known as Olamilekan, while the second person remains unidentified. Their attack left residents in panic,” the source said.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident on Sunday but said a full briefing on the circumstances was still pending.
“I can confirm that a police officer was a victim in the incident. I am still waiting for the details of what really happened,” he said.
The clash comes amid a spate of violent attacks on police officers in recent weeks. Last Tuesday, five police officers were killed and two others injured in an ambush by suspected gunmen in Sabon Sara village, Darazo LGA, Bauchi State. The attack occurred less than three days after another officer was killed in the Federal Capital Territory while repelling an abduction attempt.
Residents of Ijebu-Ode are now on edge following the fatal violence, highlighting ongoing concerns over cult-related clashes and security challenges in the state.
