Ogun Pensioners Hail Abiodun Over Free Health Insurance Scheme for Retirees

NUP says governor’s approval of retirees’ health insurance scheme reflects compassion, commitment to senior citizens’ welfare.

Pensioners in Ogun State have commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for approving a free health insurance scheme for retired public servants in the state, describing the initiative as a major relief for senior citizens battling increasing healthcare costs.

The commendation was contained in a letter addressed to Governor Abiodun through the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State Council.

In the letter signed by the State President of the union, Comrade Waidi Oloyede, the pensioners expressed profound appreciation to the governor for extending the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme to retirees at no financial cost to them.

The union described the decision as a landmark intervention that directly addresses one of the most pressing challenges confronting pensioners, particularly the burden of medical expenses associated with ageing.

Comrade Oloyede stated that the approval demonstrated Governor Abiodun’s compassion, foresight, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of retirees who had dedicated the productive years of their lives to the service and development of Ogun State.

According to him, advancing age naturally comes with increased health challenges, while many pensioners continue to struggle with the high cost of medical care despite living on modest pensions.

He noted that the inclusion of retirees in the state’s health insurance programme would significantly ease the financial burden on senior citizens and guarantee them improved access to quality healthcare services.

The pensioners’ leader described Governor Abiodun as a pensioners-friendly governor whose administration has consistently shown concern for the wellbeing and dignity of retired public servants.

He added that the gesture further reinforced the confidence of pensioners in the present administration and affirmed that retirees remain valued members of society whose sacrifices and contributions have not been forgotten.

Comrade Oloyede also assured the governor of the continued support, prayers, and cooperation of pensioners across the state as the administration continues to implement its “Building Our Future Together” agenda.

The Ogun State Government had recently approved the Ogun State Retirees Health Insurance Scheme (OGRHIS), under which retirees are expected to enjoy comprehensive health insurance coverage funded entirely by the government.

The initiative is designed to provide retired public servants with access to affordable and quality healthcare services through accredited health facilities across the state while reducing out-of-pocket medical spending among pensioners.
