Nigeria Condemns Guinea-Bissau Coup, Demands Immediate Restoration of Constitutional Order

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a dangerous assault on democratic governance in West Africa.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria expressed “profound dismay and deep concern” over the forceful takeover of government in the neighbouring West African nation.

According to the statement, the coup represents a blatant violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which prohibits the seizure of power through unconstitutional means.
Nigeria warned that the insurrection threatens not only Guinea-Bissau’s stability but could also destabilize the wider sub-region.

The Nigerian government urged the coup leaders to restore constitutional order without delay and ensure the safety of all detained persons while also demanding full respect for democratic institutions in Guinea-Bissau, calling for the protection of all election observers currently in the country on official duty.

Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to working with ECOWAS, the African Union, and international partners to ensure a swift return to normalcy in Guinea-Bissau.

“Those behind this act will be held accountable for actions that threaten to plunge the nation into chaos and reverse democratic gains,” the statement warned.

The Ministry emphasised Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding peace, democracy, and stability across Africa.
