The need for a more efficient, accountable and results-driven judiciary took centre stage as judicial officers, legal practitioners and key stakeholders from across Nigeria converged in Bordeaux, France, for the 17th Annual Judges’ Retreat, an important gathering dedicated to advancing reforms within the nation’s justice sector.
The retreat, themed “Enhancing Judicial Productivity: From Institutional Reform to Measurable Results,” provided a strategic platform for robust discussions on strengthening judicial institutions, improving service delivery within the courts and fostering greater public confidence in the administration of justice.
Among the distinguished participants was the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, who joined judges, senior legal practitioners, policymakers and other stakeholders at the high-level event.

Speaking on the significance of the retreat, Obasa noted that the gathering offered a valuable opportunity for stakeholders within the justice sector to reflect on existing challenges, assess ongoing reforms and explore practical solutions capable of improving judicial efficiency and effectiveness.
According to him, the theme of the retreat underscores the growing need for judicial institutions to move beyond policy discussions and focus on delivering measurable outcomes that enhance public trust in the justice system.

He emphasized that reforms within the judiciary must be geared towards achieving tangible improvements in case management, access to justice, institutional transparency and overall productivity.
The Speaker further observed that a strong and independent judiciary remains a critical pillar of democratic governance and national development.
He stressed that sustained collaboration between the Legislature and the Judiciary is essential for building institutions capable of responding effectively to the expectations of citizens and the demands of a modern democratic society.

According to him, both arms of government share a common responsibility to promote the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that justice is administered fairly, efficiently and without undue delay.
Obasa noted that engagements such as the annual judges’ retreat create opportunities for meaningful interaction among stakeholders, encourage the exchange of ideas and facilitate the development of innovative approaches to judicial administration.
He expressed optimism that deliberations at the retreat would contribute significantly to ongoing efforts aimed at modernising the justice sector and improving the quality of judicial service delivery across the country.
Participants at the retreat are expected to examine a wide range of issues affecting judicial performance, including institutional reforms, technological innovation, case management systems, judicial accountability and strategies for improving public perception of the courts.

The gathering also provides an avenue for sharing global best practices and exploring reforms capable of strengthening the capacity of judicial institutions to meet contemporary challenges.
Observers say the retreat comes at a time when increasing demands are being placed on the judiciary to deliver justice more efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of integrity, independence and professionalism.
As discussions continue, stakeholders are expected to develop recommendations aimed at enhancing judicial productivity, strengthening institutional frameworks and ensuring that the justice system remains responsive to the aspirations and expectations of the Nigerian people.
