Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their long-standing strategic partnership following a high-level bilateral meeting between senior officials of both countries in Abuja.
The meeting marked the first official visit to Nigeria by the newly appointed United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Frank Garcia, who led a delegation to engage with Nigerian government officials on issues of mutual interest.

Receiving the delegation, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, described the visit as another milestone in the enduring relationship between both countries, noting that it provided an opportunity to consolidate existing gains while exploring new areas of collaboration.
According to the minister, discussions focused on reviewing progress made under the Nigeria–United States Joint Working Group, assessing ongoing bilateral engagements and reaffirming the shared commitment of both governments to stronger diplomatic dialogue, security cooperation and mutually beneficial partnerships.

He emphasized that Nigeria attaches great importance to its relationship with the United States and remains committed to expanding cooperation in areas including regional security, trade and investment, democratic governance, economic development and institutional capacity building.
The minister further noted that sustained engagement between the two countries has continued to produce positive outcomes and expressed optimism that the latest discussions would open additional opportunities for collaboration on shared regional and global priorities.
Responding on behalf of the United States delegation, Assistant Secretary Frank Garcia reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to maintaining a strong and productive relationship with Nigeria, describing the country as one of America’s most important strategic partners in Africa.

Garcia commended Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting peace, stability and democratic governance across West Africa and reiterated the United States’ readiness to deepen cooperation in areas of security, economic development, governance and regional stability.
He also stressed the importance of regular high-level engagements between both governments, noting that sustained dialogue remains essential for addressing emerging security challenges, strengthening bilateral relations and advancing shared strategic interests.
Both delegations agreed that the Joint Working Group remains an important mechanism for implementing bilateral initiatives and ensuring continuous collaboration on issues affecting both countries.
The meeting also reviewed progress made in previous bilateral engagements, particularly in security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, intelligence sharing and regional peace initiatives, while reaffirming the determination of both governments to sustain those gains.

Observers say the visit underscores the growing importance both countries attach to their strategic partnership at a time when regional security, economic resilience and democratic governance continue to dominate international engagement across Africa.
The discussions concluded with both Nigeria and the United States expressing confidence in the future of their bilateral relationship and reaffirming their commitment to closer cooperation in pursuit of peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development.
