Ogun State’s Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo is gearing up to handle international Hajj flights, marking a major milestone in the state’s aviation and logistics capacity.
A strategic security and operational meeting held on March 9, 2026, brought together state officials and key federal agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The airport, which has already commenced commercial flight operations, is now certified to manage the Hajj pilgrimage.
Gbenga Dairo, Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, confirmed that the facility possesses the necessary infrastructure, modern facilities, and management capacity to facilitate the smooth departure of pilgrims.
A temporary transit camp will be established to process approximately 500 pilgrims departing for the Holy Land this year.
Consultant Dapo Olumide added that Gateway International Airport is equipped to handle various categories of aircraft, reflecting its readiness for both domestic and international operations.
Meanwhile, Uyiekpen Asuen of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed that Gateway is among 17 airports nationwide designated for Hajj operations, underscoring Ogun State’s growing role as a strategic aviation and logistics hub in West Africa.
The successful preparation of the airport for Hajj operations is expected to enhance regional connectivity, boost the state’s profile in international air travel, and support its broader economic and industrial development objectives.
