Ogun Strengthens Transport Network as Kara Bridge Repairs Begin and Gateway Airport Prepares for Hajj Operations

Gateway State Advances Infrastructure Push Amid Road Safety Upgrade and Aviation Expansion

Ogun State’s evolving reputation as Nigeria’s strategic logistics and industrial corridor received renewed attention on March 10, 2026, as two major infrastructure developments unfolded simultaneously — the commencement of maintenance works on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and preparations for international Hajj operations at the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo.

Together, the developments highlight the dual focus of federal and state authorities on strengthening both road and aviation connectivity within the Gateway State, a critical transport corridor linking Lagos to the rest of the country.

The Federal Ministry of Works has commenced urgent maintenance work on the Kara Bridge along the outbound Lagos corridor of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The project, which began today, March 10, 2026, is expected to last for two weeks and will conclude on March 24.

The rehabilitation focuses primarily on the replacement of damaged expansion joints that engineers say have reached a critical level of deterioration and require immediate intervention to prevent structural complications.

Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Engr. Olayiwola Komolafe, issued a travel advisory warning motorists to anticipate traffic disruptions and to make use of designated alternative routes during the maintenance period.

Motorists traveling from Ikorodu toward northern destinations are advised to use the Shimawa or Mosinmi routes to access Mowe, Sagamu, and Ibadan.

Meanwhile, commuters traveling from Lagos Island to eastern corridors are encouraged to utilize the Epe–Ijebu Ode route.

The Kara Bridge intervention forms part of a wider federal stabilization program covering key infrastructure along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, including the Arepo and Magboro bridges which were earlier identified in 2025 as requiring urgent structural attention.

Authorities say the project is essential to safeguard the thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles that use the corridor daily.

Gateway International Airport Prepares for International Hajj Operations
At the same time, Ogun State is advancing its aviation ambitions as the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo prepares to handle international Hajj flights for the first time.

A high-level security and operational coordination meeting held on March 9 brought together representatives of federal agencies including the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo, confirmed that the airport has the infrastructure and regulatory clearance required to support the pilgrimage operations.

According to officials, a temporary pilgrims’ transit camp will be established at the airport to process approximately 500 intending pilgrims expected to depart from Ogun State for the 2026 Hajj.

Aviation consultant Dapo Olumide explained that the airport’s runway and supporting infrastructure can accommodate different categories of aircraft, positioning the facility to handle both domestic and international flights.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has already designated Gateway International Airport as one of 17 airports nationwide approved for Hajj operations.

Strategic Implications for Ogun’s Logistics Economy

The simultaneous developments in road maintenance and aviation readiness illustrate Ogun State’s expanding role as a transportation hub within Nigeria’s economic architecture.

While the Kara Bridge repairs aim to preserve the efficiency of one of the country’s busiest highway corridors, the activation of international Hajj operations at Gateway Airport signals the state’s growing participation in Nigeria’s aviation and pilgrimage logistics network.

For policymakers and investors alike, the projects underscore Ogun’s continued efforts to reinforce its position as a gateway for commerce, mobility, and regional connectivity.
