FAITH MEETS TRADITION: OGOJI IDAYAT TOPE INSTALLED AS IYALODE OF IRETE KINGDOM AT ONIRETE’S 4TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The atmosphere in Irete-Ijebu, Ogun State, was one of color, pride, and spiritual reflection as the ancient town celebrated the 4th Coronation Anniversary of His Royal Highness, Oba (Dr.) Abdul-Ganiyu Olusegun Awokoya Yesufu, Kutmehin Adetutu I, the Onirete of Irete-Ijebu.

At the heart of the celebration stood Chief (Mrs.) Ogoji Idayat Tope, who was formally installed as the Iyalode of Irete Kingdom — a title steeped in history and symbolic power. Her installation marked a defining moment for the women of Irete and a notable intersection of faith, tradition, and female leadership.

A devout Muslim in a traditional space.

What made the moment particularly striking was Chief Idayat’s unwavering devotion to her Islamic faith, even as she took on one of Yoruba culture’s most sacred traditional roles. Observers watched in quiet admiration as she received the symbolic crown and the ritual leaves — elements deeply rooted in Yoruba cosmology.

In that instance, the new Iyalode embodied a rare harmony — standing as a Muslim woman fully grounded in her faith, yet respectfully embracing the rituals that connect her people to their ancestral heritage. Her composure and humility during the rite spoke volumes about her understanding of Yoruba wisdom, where religion and culture are not adversaries, but parallel expressions of identity.

“This title is more than an honor,” she said after her installation. “It is a divine call to service — to uphold the dignity of womanhood, promote peace, and empower the next generation.”

The ceremony itself reflected the warmth and humility of Oba Awokoya Yesufu’s leadership. Despite the grandeur of the event — with dignitaries, traditional rulers, and guests from across Ijebuland in attendance — the monarch was seen moving among his guests, personally supervising the distribution of food and drinks.

It was an uncommon but telling gesture: a royal act of service that resonated with those present. “Kabiyesi made everyone feel special,” one guest noted. “He is a king who leads not from a throne of distance, but from the heart of his people.”

Amid the glamour and generosity of the day, a poignant scene unfolded outside the palace gates — a small group of underprivileged youths follow after guests appealing for assistance. It was a sobering reminder that even in times of abundance, poverty remains a silent witness to celebration.

Yet, for many, the installation of the new Iyalode sparked renewed hope. Known for her compassion and community engagement, Chief Ogoji Idayat Tope is expected to champion initiatives that uplift women and youth, offering a promise that those on society’s margins may soon feel the impact of progress within Irete Kingdom.

Celebrating leadership and community

The day also witnessed the conferment of other prestigious titles. Hon. Rafiu Olumide Adesanya was installed as the Otunba Jadiara of Irete Kingdom, while his wife, Mrs. Afolashade Adesanya, became the Yeye Otunba Jadiara. Their recognition underscored the kingdom’s ongoing commitment to celebrating individuals who embody service, loyalty, and integrity.

The palace grounds were alive with drumming, dancing, and the brilliance of Yoruba pageantry, culminating in a thrilling performance by Fuji legend King Wasiu Osupa. Beyond the entertainment, the event was a reaffirmation of identity — a reminder that tradition, when embraced with sincerity, continues to bind communities together.

As Irete-Ijebu marks four years under Oba Awokoya Yesufu’s reign, the community reflects on steady progress in peacebuilding, youth engagement, and cultural preservation. The installation of Chief Ogoji Idayat Tope as Iyalode adds another layer to that story — one of inclusion, faith, and the rising influence of women in traditional governance.

Her emergence signals a future where devotion and duty coexist; where the Yoruba essence of balance — between the spiritual and the social — finds fresh expression in modern leadership.

As the sun set over the festive town, royal fathers joined the Onirete in offering blessings for continued unity and prosperity. For Irete Kingdom, it was more than a coronation anniversary — it was a celebration of harmony between faith and tradition, and a reaffirmation of a people’s shared destiny.
