Awujale Succession: Ogun Govt Suspends Obaship Process, DSS Meeting Moved to Ijebu-Ode Office

The Ogun State Government has ordered an immediate suspension of the Awujale of Ijebuland succession process.

The directive is contained in a letter dated January 21, 2026, and signed by Hon. Ganiu Hamzat, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, directing that all activities relating to the selection of a new Awujale be stopped until further notice.

On Wednesday, activities at the Awujale Palace in Ijebu-Ode continued normally, but succession-related engagements were not held at the palace.

A meeting between officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) and nominated candidates for the Awujale stool, earlier scheduled to hold at the palace, has been relocated and will now take place at the DSS office in Ijebu-Ode from 10:00 a.m. today.

The suspension letter, addressed to the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, cited concerns that recent steps in the succession process were not in line with the declaration guiding the Awujale stool, adding that the decision was taken in the interest of peace and public order.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Ogun State Government nor the DSS had issued further public statements on the matter.
