The ancient town of Badagry has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Akran of Badagry Kingdom, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, who passed on at the age of 125.
The revered monarch was reported to have died in the early hours of Monday, January 12, 2026. As of press time, the palace has yet to release official details on the circumstances surrounding his passing.
In line with age-long traditions, Badagry was gripped by solemnity as traditional rites commenced immediately. Markets across the town were reportedly shut, while the Oro masquerade is expected to make public appearances, signalling the transition of a paramount ruler.
Residents described the atmosphere in Badagry as sombre, marked by shock and deep reflection, as the kingdom prepares to honour a monarch widely regarded as one of the most influential and longest-reigning traditional rulers in Lagos State.
Oba Menu-Toyi I ascended the throne in 1977 and reigned for 48 years, cementing his place as one of the longest-serving monarchs in the state’s history. His influence extended beyond the palace into politics, journalism and education.
Before becoming Akran, he was an active politician and journalist. A member of the historic Action Group, he represented Badagry in Parliament in 1951 and later served as a minister during Nigeria’s pre-independence era, contributing to the political foundation of the nation.
The late monarch was also instrumental in the establishment of Badagry Grammar School, one of the town’s flagship secondary schools, reflecting his lifelong commitment to education and community development.
As traditional rites continue and the palace prepares to make further announcements, tributes are already pouring in for a monarch remembered for his exceptional longevity, leadership and enduring legacy.
