2027: Hunye Vows To Continue APC Ticket Battle As Party Declares Adeola Candidate

Ogun governorship aspirant rejects suspension claim, says court will determine who flies APC flag

The political crisis within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over its 2027 governorship ticket has taken a new dimension, with the party petitioning the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) over the activities of governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye.

The development came as Hunye continued to challenge the outcome of the APC governorship primary in court and rejected the party’s claim that he had been suspended.

The APC has maintained that Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, is its duly nominated candidate for the 2027 Ogun governorship election, while Hunye insists that the question of who will ultimately emerge as the party’s candidate remains before the judiciary.

The dispute has consequently moved beyond an internal party disagreement, with the APC now seeking the intervention of security agencies over what it described as Hunye’s impersonation and activities capable of causing a breach of the peace.

In separate letters dated August 24, 2026, the APC’s Director of Administration, Ayoola Peter Olajolo, petitioned the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the DSS over Hunye’s activities.

The party alleged that Hunye’s conduct amounted to impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and violation of the Electoral Act, 2026.

It asked the security agencies to invite Hunye for questioning, investigate the allegations and prosecute him if found culpable.

The APC also requested that the agencies restrain Hunye from presenting himself as the party’s governorship candidate.

According to documents cited by the party, the petition to the police was received at Force Headquarters, Abuja, on August 24, while the DSS received its copy the same day.

The latest action underscores the seriousness of the disagreement between Hunye and the party leadership as preparations intensify for the 2027 election.

The APC had earlier issued a disclaimer distancing itself from Hunye and describing him as an impostor.

In the statement signed by the party’s National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the APC said Hunye remained suspended and had no authority to represent the party or present himself as its governorship candidate.

The party affirmed Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan as its duly nominated governorship candidate, with Balogun Kudirat Abiodun as his running mate.

It further stated that the names of Adeola and his running mate had been uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal, with acknowledgment slips showing that the submission was made on August 7, 2026.

The APC also warned members of the public against transacting political business with Hunye in the name of the party.

Speaking on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Hunye rejected the description of himself as an impostor.

He said he had never claimed to be the APC’s officially recognised candidate.

“I want to correct that story. I never said I was. I remain an aspirant,” he said.

Hunye also challenged the party’s claim that he had been suspended.

“If they say they have suspended me. I have not received any letter. No letter was sent to me,” he said.

He argued that due process should have been followed before any suspension could be valid.

According to Hunye, he was allowed to obtain the APC governorship nomination form and participate in the screening exercise after the period during which the party claimed he had been suspended.

He said he obtained the nomination form at the national secretariat on April 28 and paid N50 million for it.

“You collected money and gave me form. On the 15th again, I went for screening,” he said.

Hunye said he was subsequently screened and cleared to participate in the governorship contest.

He said he was assigned number 62 during the screening, while Adeola was assigned number 53.

At the heart of Hunye’s legal action is the outcome of the APC governorship primary.

Hunye questioned the declaration that he scored zero votes, insisting that he participated in the primary and did not withdraw from the race.

“So there was no withdrawal in my own name. I participated in the election and they admitted that I participated,” he said.

He said he subsequently wrote to the party chairman and the relevant committee to protest the outcome but alleged that his complaints were ignored.

“I wrote immediately. I wrote to the party chairman. I wrote to the committee. They refuse to do anything,” he said.

Hunye said he therefore turned to the court for redress.

“The law also gives us an opportunity to hear our view and that’s exactly what I’m doing,” he said.

‘What Happened In Osun Will Be A Child’s Play’

Hunye warned that the consequences of unresolved grievances within the APC could be significant as the 2027 election approaches.

Referring to the political crisis surrounding the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, he said Ogun could witness an even more intense confrontation.

“They saw what happened in Osun. What happened in Osun is going to be a child’s play to what is going to happen in Ogun State in 2027,” he warned.

He argued that political actors could not deny people what they perceived as their rights and expect them to remain silent.

“What happened in Osun was the same thing. You cannot deprive people of their rights and want them to now keep quiet. They will not keep quiet,” he said.

Hunye said his disagreement with the emergence of Adeola was rooted in what he described as the imposition of a preferred candidate by Governor Dapo Abiodun and the APC leadership.

He challenged the party to conduct a transparent primary, arguing that Adeola should be allowed to test his popularity among delegates.

“He imposed him on us. And you want to force us to obey it. If you agree that he is popular, let the primaries be free and fair. And if he wins the primary, everybody will agree,” Hunye said.

He also claimed that some members of Governor Abiodun’s cabinet were unhappy with Adeola’s emergence.

“Quite a number of people in Dapo Abiodun’s cabinet are with us. They are not happy. People are not happy,” he said.

Hunye also suggested that the APC’s insistence that he had been suspended could be connected to his ongoing court case.

He alleged that establishing his suspension could be used to challenge his legal standing in the suit.

According to him, the court case also raises questions concerning information allegedly supplied by Adeola during previous electoral processes.

Hunye referred to Adeola’s previous political offices in Lagos State and said there were several issues before the court that he did not wish to discuss in detail during the radio interview.

Asked whether he believed some of the issues amounted to perjury, Hunye answered in the affirmative.

He said previous legal challenges had failed partly because the litigants lacked locus standi.

“But they lost the case because they were not locus. And that is what they are fighting. They want to remove me as a locus,” he said.

He further alleged that the suspension could therefore be intended to weaken his position in court.

According to documents issued by the party, the process originated from a petition by the Executive Committee of Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area dated March 23, 2026.

The petition reportedly accused Hunye of “nefarious dealings” and “anti-party activities.”

The Ipokia Local Government Executive Committee ratified the suspension on March 27, while the Ogun State Working Committee approved it on April 7 following a meeting at the party secretariat in Abeokuta.

The party said the Ogun State Working Committee subsequently notified the APC National Screening Committee for governorship aspirants of the ratification on May 5.

This account is at variance with Hunye’s position that he was never formally notified of the suspension and that the party’s subsequent actions amounted to an acceptance of his participation in the governorship contest.

Despite the latest moves by the APC, Hunye said he would not withdraw his legal challenge.

“Ogun State candidature of governorship election is still hanging at the court. The court is going to determine who becomes the candidate and the case is still on,” he said.

He said reports that he had stepped down or reached a settlement prompted him to publicly clarify his position.

“I was told that I have stepped down and that they have settled me and things like that, that is why I came up to tell everybody that the case is still in court and until that judgment is delivered, no candidate is decided,” he said.

Hunye also accused the APC of trying to intimidate him into abandoning the case.

“Whatever the APC likes let them do. They are trying to intimidate me so that I can drop the case and I will not,” he said.

He said he trusted the judiciary and would accept the eventual judgment.

Hunye added that he would support the APC candidate if the court ruled against him, while also promising to reconcile with members of the opposing camp if the judgment went in his favour.

The Ogun APC governorship controversy therefore remains unresolved, with the party insisting that Adeola is its duly nominated candidate, while Hunye continues to pursue his legal challenge and rejects the party’s account of his suspension.

With the 2027 election approaching, the outcome of the court proceedings and the latest intervention of security agencies could prove decisive in determining the next phase of the APC’s internal battle over its Ogun governorship ticket.
