Nigerian table tennis legend Olufunke Oshonaike has reached another historic milestone, becoming the first Nigerian ever to be appointed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission. Her selection came through a nomination by IOC Athletes’ Commission Chair and IOC Executive Board member Kirsty Coventry, placing her among five newly confirmed members.
The appointment strengthens the Commission as it prepares for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, adding voices with deep competitive and administrative experience.
Oshonaike’s Olympic footprint is unmatched in Africa. After making her debut at Atlanta 1996, she went on to appear in every Olympic Games for the next 24 years, culminating in Tokyo 2020. Beyond competition, she has remained active in athlete advocacy through her roles on both the Nigeria National Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission and the Nigeria Table Tennis Athletes’ Commission.
Reflecting on the honour, Oshonaike described the moment as both emotional and affirming.
“I am so excited because during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games campaign, I was impressed by the huge support from my country and athletes across the world.”
She added that the appointment validates her years of dedication:
“This appointment confirms that my efforts did not go unnoticed. It has been my dream to impact the sport that has given me the rare opportunity to live well in life.”
With this achievement, Oshonaike not only elevates Nigeria’s presence within global sports governance but also strengthens the representation of African athletes at the highest decision-making level in world sports.
