BREAKING: Ibrahim Gusau Resigns As NFF President

NFF chief steps down amid mounting pressure over Nigeria’s football fortunes; several Executive Committee members also reported to have resigned

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has resigned from office, bringing his tenure as head of Nigeria’s football governing body to an abrupt end.

Gusau confirmed his resignation on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press conference in Abuja.

The resignation comes amid mounting pressure on the NFF leadership following a series of setbacks involving Nigeria’s national teams and growing concerns over the administration of football in the country.

Several members of the NFF Executive Committee have also reportedly resigned, with multiple reports indicating that as many as eight of the 13-member board had stepped down or indicated their intention to leave.

The latest development represents a major leadership shake-up at the Glass House and is expected to have significant implications for the administration and electoral process of Nigerian football.

One of the most damaging setbacks was Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending the Super Falcons’ record of appearing at every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991.

The Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup also intensified criticism of the federation’s leadership.

The Super Falcons subsequently lost 2-1 to South Africa in the World Cup qualification play-off, ending Nigeria’s hopes of participating in the 2027 tournament.

The setbacks prompted widespread calls for accountability and renewed demands for changes in the management of Nigerian football.

Security agencies have reportedly been examining the utilisation of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the federation to settle outstanding payments owed to national-team players and officials.

The financial questions have added to the pressure surrounding the federation at a time when its sporting results have also come under intense public criticism.

An NFF fact-finding committee set up to examine the poor performances of the national teams reportedly raised concerns about aspects of player selection and alleged influence by some officials in the invitation of players to national-team camps.

The federation had been preparing for an elective congress scheduled for September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

With Gusau and several Executive Committee members now out of office, questions are expected to arise over the conduct of the election and the structure that will oversee the transition.

The NFF Congress has reportedly been summoned for an emergency meeting following Gusau’s resignation.

The emergency meeting is expected to provide greater clarity on the immediate administration of the federation and the next steps following the mass resignations.

Gusau became NFF president after emerging victorious in the federation’s 2022 election and subsequently led Nigerian football through a period marked by both successes and significant challenges.

His administration has faced increasing criticism over the performances of the national teams, the management of players and officials’ entitlements, and wider questions about the governance of Nigerian football.

The latest leadership crisis has therefore generated calls from football stakeholders for a fundamental restructuring of the sport’s administration rather than simply a change of individuals.

Attention will now shift to the NFF Congress and other relevant stakeholders to determine how the federation will be managed during the transition.

For Nigerian football fans, the immediate expectation is that the leadership change will provide an opportunity to restore confidence, strengthen accountability and develop a more effective system for managing the country’s football affairs.

The resignation of Gusau and the reported departure of several Executive Committee members marks a defining moment for Nigerian football, with the next steps likely to determine whether the crisis becomes another chapter in the federation’s troubled history or the beginning of a broader reform of the game.
