NUJ Ogun-East Chapel Alerts Public on Fake Journalists in Ogun State: Union Launches Verification Drive to Protect Media Credibility

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ogun-East Independent Chapel has cautioned the public to beware of fake journalists operating in Ogun State without official accreditation from the Union.

The Chapel announced that the NUJ Ogun State Council has begun a comprehensive journalist verification and accreditation exercise to ensure only qualified and recognized media professionals operate under the Union’s name. The process includes the issuance of new NUJ identification cards to verified members across the state.

According to the Chapel’s statement, the move aims to curb impersonation, fake news, and quack journalism, which have continued to damage the reputation of the profession and erode public trust in the media.

“We urge members of the public, government agencies, and private organizations to always verify a journalist’s NUJ identification before granting access or interviews,” the Chapel said. “Anyone caught parading a fake or unauthorized NUJ ID card will face legal and disciplinary action.”

The Chapel reaffirmed that all legitimate members of the Ogun-East Independent Chapel have submitted their details for the ongoing verification process. It reiterated that journalism remains a regulated profession governed by ethics, constitution, and accountability.

The NUJ leadership expressed concern over the rising spread of fake news and warned that it will continue to collaborate with security agencies to track and prosecute impostors posing as journalists in Ogun State.

“Journalism is built on truth, professionalism, and integrity,” the statement added. “The NUJ Ogun-East Chapel remains committed to defending these values and ensuring that only trained, verified, and accredited journalists operate under its banner.”
