Nigeria–Türkiye relations take a fresh turn as President Tinubu begins high-level state visit today

Visit targets deeper cooperation in security, trade, innovation, aviation and diplomacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departs Abuja today, Monday, January 26, on a high-level state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, marking a renewed phase in diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Türkiye.

The visit is aimed at strengthening the existing cordial ties between both countries while expanding collaboration in critical areas such as security, education, social development, innovation and aviation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last paid an official visit to Nigeria in October 2021.

During the state visit, President Tinubu and President Erdoğan are expected to engage in strategic political and diplomatic discussions focused on shared priorities in finance, communication, trade and investment.

The programme includes high-level meetings between senior officials of both nations and the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering scientific research, energy, technical cooperation, media and communications, military cooperation and protocol, among others.

A Nigeria–Türkiye business forum will also be held, bringing together investors from both countries to explore new areas of economic partnership.

Members of the President’s delegation participating in the bilateral discussions include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN; Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd); and Chairman, House Committee on Defence, Hon. Jimi Benson.

Other members of the entourage are the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the visit.
