Agency to activate early flood preparedness measures based on forecast
The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has praised the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for the timely release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), describing it as critical to Nigeria’s disaster risk reduction and climate resilience efforts.
Mrs. Umar spoke on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the public presentation of the 2026 SCP held at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja, where she stated that NEMA would immediately leverage the forecast to trigger early flood preparedness and other climate risk management actions across the country.
She disclosed that the agency would convene a technical session of experts to analyse the predictions and develop detailed disaster risk implications, alongside practical guidance for flood preparedness and mitigation nationwide.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, described meteorological and climate services as essential tools for national safety, planning, and development.
He noted that the 2026 SCP provides scientifically grounded guidance for risk management across multiple sectors.
The Director-General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to delivering timely, accurate, and reliable climate information to support disaster preparedness and socio-economic development.
