Monday Brief: Appeal Court Set to Rule Today on PDP Leadership Crisis

Judgment expected to determine the legitimacy of the party’s National Working Committee ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Court of Appeal (Nigeria) is expected to deliver judgment today, Monday, March 9, in the protracted leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a decision widely seen as pivotal to the future of Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Turaki and Wike

The ruling is anticipated to resolve months of internal conflict that has threatened to weaken the party ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The crisis began after the PDP’s National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025, which produced a National Working Committee (NWC) led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.

However, the outcome of the convention was challenged by a faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Members of the Wike-backed group, including Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, approached the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja and obtained interlocutory orders restraining the Turaki-led leadership from parading themselves as party officials.

The orders were issued in separate proceedings presided over by Justice Peter Lifu and later Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, effectively stalling the operations of the newly elected executive.

Further complicating the matter, a High Court in Ibadan presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola issued a separate order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the outcome of the convention.

The conflicting rulings triggered accusations of judicial forum shopping and deepened uncertainty over the party’s legitimate leadership.

To address the situation, the Court of Appeal consolidated the various appeals into a single proceeding and is now expected to deliver a decisive judgment that could determine the PDP’s leadership structure.

The implications extend beyond the internal affairs of the party. Political observers say the stability of Nigeria’s democratic system relies on the presence of a strong opposition.

Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has previously emphasized the role of the judiciary in resolving the dispute and safeguarding democratic stability.

If the court validates the Ibadan convention, analysts believe the Turaki-led leadership may begin reconciliation efforts across the party, possibly involving consultations with key political figures such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military president Ibrahim Babangida.

However, if the appellate court upholds the challenges against the convention, the crisis may persist, potentially forcing the party to operate under a caretaker arrangement and complicating its preparations for the 2027 polls.
