The Washington Post’s recent decision to lay off more than 300 staff — cutting back on sports, local, and international coverage — is another reminder of the growing uncertainty facing journalism worldwide.
Explaining the move, Executive Editor Matt Murray noted that the organisation had been losing money for a long time and was no longer meeting readers’ needs.
But beyond the economic realities and digital disruption confronting media houses globally, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, founder of Journalists for Christ International Outreach, says this moment calls for deep spiritual reflection among media professionals.
Drawing from a 1990s article titled “Trusting God in an Uncertain Business,” originally published by Christians in the Media in Sydney, Australia, Otufodunrin revisits a timeless question:
How can anyone have confidence working in an industry as volatile as the media?
According to him, while newsroom shutdowns, job losses, and shrinking opportunities are real and painful, journalists must resist the temptation to surrender to anxiety.
Quoting Philippians 4:6–7, he reminds media practitioners:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Otufodunrin explains that the Apostle Paul did not deny that anxious moments would come, especially in seasons like this, but encouraged believers to replace worry with prayer and thanksgiving.
He urges journalists to thank God for how far they have come in their careers and to commit their future into God’s hands, trusting Him for direction and stability.
Further referencing 1 Peter 5:7 and Luke 12:25, he notes that worry adds nothing to life, while faith provides peace even when circumstances appear unstable.
In today’s fragile media environment — where newsrooms continue to shrink and career paths appear uncertain — Otufodunrin reassures journalists that Christ remains a dependable refuge in turbulent times.
