DSS Chief Hope Godwin Hails NUJ Ogun East’s Move to Promote Responsible Journalism

DSS Chief Hope Godwin commends NUJ Ogun East for promoting responsible journalism and pledges collaboration with the union to strengthen ethical media practice in Ogun State.

The Local Government Service Chief of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Ijebu-Ode, Mr. Hope Godwin, has applauded the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun East Chapel, for its efforts to strengthen ethical reporting and professional collaboration in the district.

Mr. Godwin made the remark on Wednesday when the NUJ Ogun East executive council paid him a courtesy visit at the DSS office in Ijebu-Ode. The visit formally introduced the newly inaugurated chapel and sought closer working ties with the security agency.

He said the engagement was timely, noting that he had recently been transferred to the area and was looking for credible partners to work with.

“I’m particularly excited about this visit because I’ve been thinking of who to collaborate with in this area, and your union is a key stakeholder in maintaining peace, transparency, and professionalism,” Godwin stated.
“The operations of the DSS and the NUJ are interrelated, and collaboration between us will help both institutions achieve their aims. You can count on our support while I’m here,” he added.

Earlier, Comrade Seun Oduneye, Chairman of NUJ Ogun East, explained that the chapel was created by the state council to decentralize information and bring government reportage closer to the grassroots.

According to him, the union seeks to ensure that journalists in the area are properly represented and protected while promoting accurate and responsible journalism.

The Chapel Secretary, Comrade Funmi Adewoju Suleodu, noted that most journalists in Ogun East operate independently, making it important for them to unite under the NUJ for protection and professional regulation.

“Part of our mandate is to sanitize the media space and ensure only trained and qualified professionals are recognized,” she said.

Also speaking, the Task Force Head, Comrade Daniel Dairo, stressed that the media and security agencies are interdependent partners committed to peace, accountability, and public safety.

Mr. Godwin commended the NUJ team for the visit and assured them of continuous collaboration with the DSS to achieve their common goals.

Also present at the meeting were Comrade Dare Majekodunmi and several DSS officials.
