For eight birthdays, Sanwo-Olu has celebrated as governor of Lagos State, presiding over a period marked by unprecedented infrastructure expansion, transportation reforms, economic modernization, urban regeneration and governance innovations.

His story is one of preparation, patience and public service.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Born on June 25, 1965, in Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu belongs to a generation that witnessed Lagos evolve from a former federal capital into a global megacity.

A graduate of the University of Lagos, where he studied Surveying and Geo-Informatics, Sanwo-Olu later acquired professional qualifications in management, finance and public administration from institutions including the London Business School, Lagos Business School and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Before politics, he built a successful career in the banking sector, working with financial institutions where he gained experience in management, strategic planning and organizational leadership.

His transition into public service came during the administration of former Lagos governors, where he served in several capacities, including: Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions and Managing Director of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC)

Those years earned him a reputation as a quiet but effective administrator who preferred results to political grandstanding.

In 2018, Sanwo-Olu emerged as the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Lagos governorship election.

His victory in the 2019 election ushered him into office on May 29, 2019, succeeding Akinwunmi Ambode.

Few months into his first term, the world was confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, placing Lagos at the epicenter of Nigeria’s response.

One of the defining moments of Sanwo-Olu’s administration came during the COVID-19 crisis being the chairman of the state’s pandemic response team, he became the public face of Lagos’ battle against the virus.

Daily briefings, emergency healthcare interventions, isolation centers and public health campaigns became hallmarks of his administration during the period.

Many observers believe the crisis tested his leadership style more than any other event during his first term.

The experience strengthened Lagos’ emergency response infrastructure and accelerated investments in healthcare facilities.

Upon assuming office, Sanwo-Olu introduced the THEMES development agenda, focusing on: Traffic Management and Transportation, Health and Environment, Education and Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, Entertainment and Tourism and Security and Governance

The framework later evolved into THEMES+ to accommodate emerging priorities shaping policy decisions across sectors over the years.

Perhaps no sector better illustrates Sanwo-Olu’s legacy than transportation.

The completion and operation of the Lagos Blue Rail Line marked a historic achievement.

The rail system, first conceived decades earlier, became operational under Sanwo-Olu’s administration, providing residents with an alternative to road transportation.

His government also completed and commissioned the Red Line Rail project, further expanding Lagos’ rail network and reducing commuting pressures.

The Lekki Deep Sea Port has strengthened Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s commercial gateway and a leading logistics hub in Africa.

The administration increased investment in ferry services, jetties and waterways infrastructure as part of efforts to create a multi-modal transportation system.

Road expansion, urban renewal projects and strategic infrastructure investments have remained central to Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda.

Sanwo-Olu’s tenure has witnessed major road and bridge projects across the state including Lekki-Epe corridor upgrades, Ojota and Maryland road improvements, Ongoing Fourth Mainland Bridge preparations, completion of several inner-city road projects and expansion of strategic transportation corridors

These projects have aimed at addressing congestion while supporting economic activities.

Recognizing Lagos as Nigeria’s innovation capital, Sanwo-Olu’s administration invested heavily in technology and digital governance exploring initiatives expansion of broadband infrastructure, support for startup ecosystems, digital government services, innovation hubs and technology partnerships and smart city initiatives.

Today, Lagos remains home to the largest concentration of technology startups in Nigeria and West Africa.

As governor of Nigeria’s commercial capital, Sanwo-Olu has consistently focused on attracting investment and under his leadership: Lagos continues to generate record levels of internally generated revenue, new industrial and commercial developments have emerged, public-private partnerships have expanded and infrastructure financing mechanisms have been strengthened.

His administration has repeatedly emphasized making Lagos competitive among leading global cities.

The government has undertaken school rehabilitation projects, digital learning initiatives and teacher development programmes. His contribution to Healthcare investments included: New medical facilities, Upgraded general hospitals, Maternal and child health programmes and Expanded emergency response systems

The state also strengthened disease surveillance systems following lessons learned from COVID-19.

Bear in mind that Sanwo-Olu inherited a city facing immense urbanization pressures. His administration has pursued:Urban regeneration projects, Environmental sanitation programmes, Drainage expansion works, Flood mitigation interventions and Waste management reforms. But while challenges remain, efforts to modernize urban infrastructure continue across the state.

The governor has maintained significant investments in security architecture through: Deployment of surveillance technologies, Support for security agencies, Emergency response systems and Community policing initiatives marking Lagos to remain one of the most strategically secured states in Nigeria due to the concentration of economic assets and population.

Although no governorship is without challenges; Sanwo-Olu’s administration has navigated: COVID-19 disruptions, Economic headwinds, Inflationary pressures, Urban population growth, The aftermath of the EndSARS protests and Infrastructure demands of a rapidly expanding megacity which shaped both his leadership style and public perception.

As he celebrates 61 years of life and more than seven years in office, Sanwo-Olu remains one of the most consequential governors in Lagos’ modern history.

His tenure has been defined by long-term infrastructure projects, transportation modernization, digital innovation and efforts to position Lagos as a globally competitive city.

Whether viewed through the lens of rail transportation, healthcare reform, technology development or economic management, his administration has pursued an ambitious vision for the future of Lagos.

In his birthday message, Governor Sanwo-Olu reflected on the privilege of serving Lagos and reaffirmed his commitment to completing ongoing projects and delivering greater progress.

For many Lagosians, the story of Babajide Sanwo-Olu is ultimately a story about continuity, resilience and the complexities of governing one of the world’s fastest-growing cities.

As Lagos continues its march toward becoming a modern African megacity, the governor’s legacy will likely be measured not only by projects commissioned today, but by how those investments shape the lives of millions in the decades ahead.
