FG strengthens oversight of education union agreements to prevent strikes

Expanded monitoring committee to track government commitments, resolve labour disputes and promote industrial harmony across tertiary institutions.

The Federal Government has strengthened its monitoring framework for agreements with organised labour in the education sector, expanding the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to ensure timely fulfilment of commitments and reduce the risk of industrial disputes across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The initiative, led by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, is aimed at improving accountability, addressing outstanding labour issues and protecting teaching, learning and research in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at the inauguration of the expanded committee in Abuja on Wednesday, Alausa said sustained oversight, accountability and prompt resolution of outstanding commitments were essential to ensuring that agreements reached with labour unions translated into concrete action.

The minister attributed the agreements negotiated with 16 labour unions within approximately one year to a consolidated negotiation structure that had improved coordination and strengthened institutional memory.

He said the expanded committee would track government commitments, identify obstacles to implementation and refer unresolved matters to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.

The committee brings together representatives of the Federal Ministries of Education, Labour and Employment, Justice, and Finance, alongside relevant government agencies, to strengthen coordination in addressing implementation challenges.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, urged stakeholders to embrace constructive dialogue and shared responsibility, stressing the importance of cooperation in maintaining stability across the education sector.

Chairman of the Implementation Monitoring Committee, Senator Olarewaju Tejuoso, announced plans to establish five standing Sectoral Implementation Monitoring Committees to address issues specific to different segments of the tertiary education system and monitor compliance with agreed commitments.

The proposed sectoral committees are expected to provide a more focused approach to identifying implementation gaps and ensuring that outstanding obligations receive the attention they require.

The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening labour relations, sustaining uninterrupted academic activities and building a stable and productive tertiary education system.

The success of the expanded monitoring structure will depend on its capacity to ensure that government commitments are fulfilled, outstanding grievances are addressed and agreements reached with unions produce tangible results.
