Abiodun Approves Free Health Insurance Scheme for Ogun Retirees

Ogun State Government introduces fully funded healthcare coverage for retired public servants, with ₦17.4 million monthly premium approved to support pensioners across the state.

The Ogun State Government has approved a new health insurance scheme for retired public servants as part of efforts to strengthen social welfare and guarantee access to quality healthcare for pensioners in the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun approved the introduction of the Ogun State Retirees Health Insurance Scheme (OGRHIS), a programme designed to provide comprehensive healthcare coverage for retired workers without requiring them to contribute financially.

Announcing the development in a statement, the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, said the initiative demonstrates the administration’s commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of retired officers who devoted their productive years to serving the state.

According to him, the governor has approved the payment of ₦17.4 million monthly as health insurance premium for retirees under the scheme, ensuring that beneficiaries enjoy full coverage at no cost to themselves.

Mr. Onasanya described the intervention as another milestone under the administration’s social welfare and wellbeing agenda, noting that the government recognises the importance of supporting pensioners, especially in retirement when healthcare needs become more demanding.

He explained that the initiative follows the successful implementation of the Public Sector Health Insurance Scheme introduced for serving public servants in August 2024, adding that extending coverage to retirees reflects the government’s policy of inclusive healthcare for all categories of workers.

The Head of Service noted that many retirees face increasing financial pressure from medical expenses, stressing that the new scheme would significantly reduce out-of-pocket healthcare spending and improve access to medical treatment.

According to him, beneficiaries under the Ogun State Retirees Health Insurance Scheme will receive healthcare services through accredited facilities across the state.

Mr. Onasanya commended Governor Abiodun for what he described as a compassionate and visionary intervention, saying the administration has consistently prioritised the welfare of both serving and retired workers.

He added that the initiative reinforces the government’s commitment to inclusive governance and recognition of the contributions made by pensioners to the development of Ogun State.

The Head of Service also called on the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency and other relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth enrolment, proper sensitisation, and effective implementation of the scheme so retirees can fully benefit from the programme.
