The Ogun State Government has approved a comprehensive health insurance scheme for retired public servants in the state as part of efforts to strengthen welfare support and guarantee access to affordable healthcare for pensioners.
The approval, granted by Governor Dapo Abiodun, introduces the Ogun State Retirees Health Insurance Scheme (OGRHIS), a new initiative designed to provide healthcare coverage for retired workers across the state without requiring financial contributions from beneficiaries.
Announcing the development in a statement, the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, said the scheme reflects the administration’s continued commitment to the welfare, dignity, and wellbeing of retired officers who served the state during their active years.
According to him, Governor Abiodun has approved the payment of ₦17.4 million monthly as insurance premium for retirees enrolled under the scheme.
Mr. Onasanya explained that all eligible retirees would enjoy full health insurance coverage at no personal cost, describing the initiative as another milestone under the administration’s social welfare agenda.
“This administration understands the value of taking care of our retirees,” he said, noting that the intervention was aimed at safeguarding the health and wellbeing of pensioners who devoted their productive years to the development of Ogun State.
The Head of Service stated that the new programme builds on the Public Sector Health Insurance Scheme earlier introduced for serving public servants in August 2024, adding that the extension to retirees demonstrates the government’s broader commitment to inclusive healthcare coverage.

He explained that the initiative was also designed to address the growing medical and financial challenges often faced by pensioners after retirement.
According to him, beneficiaries under the Ogun State Retirees Health Insurance Scheme would have access to a defined package of healthcare services through accredited health facilities across the state.
He added that the programme is expected to significantly reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses for retirees and protect them from catastrophic healthcare spending while promoting continuous access to medical care.
Mr. Onasanya, on behalf of serving and retired public servants, commended Governor Abiodun for what he described as a remarkable and compassionate intervention, noting that the governor has consistently prioritised the welfare of workers and pensioners in the state.
He said the initiative further demonstrates the administration’s recognition of human capital as a critical component of governance and development.
“By prioritising the health and welfare of pensioners, Governor Abiodun has once again reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and responsible leadership,” he said.
The Head of Service also urged the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency and other relevant stakeholders to ensure seamless enrolment, proper sensitisation, and effective implementation of the scheme to enable retirees fully benefit from the programme.
