The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has demoted a female police sergeant following the circulation of a viral TikTok video, a decision that has ignited widespread public debate over social media use by security personnel.
According to police sources, the officer was subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings after allegedly violating the NPF’s Social Media Policy. The infraction was linked to content reportedly posted while she was in full police uniform, which the Force deemed unprofessional and capable of bringing the institution into disrepute.
An internal source explained that the police uniform represents authority and public trust, adding that it is not permitted to be used for personal content creation on social media platforms.
Background checks indicate that the action was taken in line with the 2025 Revised NPF Social Media Policy, which places strict restrictions on officers’ online activities. The policy reportedly prohibits officers from identifying as police personnel on personal social media accounts without authorisation, participating in viral dance or comedy challenges while in uniform, or sharing official information, signals, or internal communications online.
The incident has divided public opinion across social media. While some Nigerians argue that the Force is right to enforce discipline and uphold professional standards, others believe the punishment was excessive and raises concerns about digital rights, freedom of expression, and selective enforcement within the system.
As the debate continues, the NPF has maintained that discipline and adherence to established codes of conduct remain central to preserving the integrity and public image of the Force.
