The Ogun State Government has launched a fresh phase of road maintenance across the state in preparation for the Yuletide season.
The initiative, led by the Ogun State Public Works Agency (OGPWA), aims to improve road conditions, ease traffic flow, and enhance safety for residents, commuters and holiday travellers.
Speaking on the renewed exercise, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Works, Engr. Babatunde Adesina, said the intervention is part of the state’s continuous road improvement programme designed to boost economic activity and ensure safer mobility.
He noted that the government is committed to keeping major and inner roads motorable throughout and after the festive period.
According to him, “We understand that the Yuletide season comes with increased movement and it is our responsibility to ensure that the roads are safe and accessible. This new phase of maintenance demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing reliable infrastructure for the people of Ogun State.”
Engr. Adesina explained that repairs are concentrated on high-traffic routes, link roads and strategic corridors connecting major communities. Multiple teams have been deployed across the three senatorial districts to ensure timely delivery.
He urged residents to support the agency by reporting roads requiring urgent attention, noting that community feedback remains invaluable to the agency’s rapid-response system.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has also announced the disbursement of a N250 million grant to trade artisans across the state.
The governor made this known during the 2024 International Community Day and World Trade Day celebration held at the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.
He said the soft loan scheme, tagged “Oko’wo Irinse Dapo,” aims to strengthen small-scale businesses and cushion the economic challenges faced by residents.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Governor Abiodun described the celebration as a reminder of the creativity of artisans and the role of community initiatives in building stronger local economies.
He urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds to improve both their individual livelihoods and the collective economy of the state.
In his welcome address, Commissioner for Community Development, Hon. Ademola Balogun, said the celebration aligns with global efforts to promote grassroots development and recognize the impact of trade groups in economic growth.
He noted that the 2024 event was significant as it coincided with the formal disbursement of Grants-in-Aid to selected community-driven projects, alongside subventions to state councils, zonal and area community development committees.
Hon. Balogun praised community leaders and artisans for managing grants responsibly and reaffirmed that the ministry would continue strict monitoring to ensure transparency and timely project delivery.
Communities that demonstrate outstanding performance, he added, will receive priority in future funding cycles.
Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Development, Arc. Olarotimi Oresile, commended the administration for raising the standard of community development in the state.
The Chairman of the Ogun State Community Development Council, High Chief Adefemi Adetayo, and Trades Council Chairman, Mr. Omoniyi Babatope, also lauded the state government for its continuous support—highlighting the earlier disbursement of N500 million low-interest loans to residents.
Awardees including Chief Idowu Ibikunle, Alh. Sikirulai Alabi Olowo, Engr. Nathaniel Sodipo Adewole, Asiwaju Titus Obajimi, and the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, Oba Lawrence Jaiyeoba Adebajo, expressed gratitude to the government for the recognition and support.
The event featured the distribution of additional grants to trade artisans and community groups.
