Nigeria is mourning the passing of one of its most revered Islamic scholars, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who died on Thursday at the age of 101. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the news as a “deep and personal loss,” calling the late leader of the Tijjaniyya Muslim Brotherhood a national treasure whose influence extended far beyond the religious sphere.
In a statement issued from the State House, the President praised Sheikh Bauchi as “a teacher, a father, and a voice of moderation and reason.” He noted the cleric’s lifelong dedication to teaching, Quranic scholarship, and promoting peace across communities.
President Tinubu recalled the profound moral support and blessings he received from the late Sheikh during the build-up to the 2023 presidential election — support he said he would “always cherish.”
“Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi spent his life advocating peace, piety, and unity,” President Tinubu said. “His death has created a huge void not only for his family and followers but for the entire nation.”
The President extended heartfelt condolences to the Tijjaniyya community, urging followers to honour the cleric’s legacy by upholding his teachings: peaceful coexistence, devotion to faith, and kindness to humanity.
Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, widely respected across West Africa, leaves behind generations of students, disciples, and admirers who view him as one of the most influential Muslim leaders of the last century.
