The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun-East Independent Chapel, has opened discussions with the Ijebu-Ode Police Area Commander, ACP Yusuf Wasiu, on ways to strengthen collaboration in combating fake journalism within the senatorial district.

The Chapel’s delegation was led by Chairman, Comrade Oluseun Oduneye, alongside Secretary, Comrade Olufunmilayo Adewoju Suleodu, and members of a newly inaugurated task force set up to address the menace.

Oduneye, while speaking during the visit, described fake journalism as a national threat requiring urgent attention. He explained that fake reports mislead the public, spread falsehoods, damage reputations, and can even trigger social unrest if left unchecked.

“We are here to establish a working relationship with the Police authorities in Ogun-East and to present our task force team to the Ijebu-Ode Command. This is a call to action against fake journalism in our region. In line with the directive from the state council, we are ready to clamp down on individuals parading fake press credentials,” he said.

Supporting his position, Chapel Secretary, Comrade Suleodu, noted that fake journalism is not just a local nuisance but a serious national problem. She emphasized that because false stories spread quickly, especially on social media, they must be tackled promptly to prevent further damage to public trust and national stability.

Suleodu further explained that the Chapel was at the Area Command to formally seek the backing of the police as the task force begins its field operations.

“We cannot carry out this assignment alone. That is why we have come to seek the support of the Area Commander. As our task force begins its work of identifying and checking unqualified persons parading as journalists, we are trusting in the Command’s cooperation and backup,” she stated.

Responding, ACP Wasiu expressed readiness to support the initiative, noting his own background as a former journalist with Tempo magazine before joining the police force.

“Fake news on social media has become a serious concern for all of us. We will fight this battle together, and you have my full support,” he assured.

Task Force Chairman, Comrade Dairo Johnson, also commended the Area Commander for his commitment to the union’s drive to eliminate fake journalism, especially in Ijebuland.
