Teachers Are the Foundation of All Professions — Gov. Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described teachers as the foundation upon which every other profession stands, noting that they remain the first enablers of national development and deserve the highest recognition and respect.

The Governor stated this during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, with the theme “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborating Profession.”

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Governor Abiodun said education extends beyond classroom instruction, as it shapes the values, vision, and vigor of entire generations. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained investment in education under the “Building Our Future Together” agenda.

“The theme of this year’s celebration challenges us to see teaching as a collective mission — one built on teamwork, mentorship, and shared learning. Teachers, parents, communities, and government must work together to prepare our children for the future,” the Governor said.

Abiodun commended teachers’ unions in the state for their dedication and contributions to Ogun’s progress, adding that his government continues to prioritise teachers’ welfare, digital competence, professional development, and infrastructure upgrades in line with global best practices.

He further acknowledged teachers as the backbone of the state’s educational advancement, pledging to provide the tools, facilities, and conducive learning environments needed for them to thrive.

“The prosperity of Ogun State rests on your shoulders. We will continue to support you in nurturing future generations who will build a more enlightened and prosperous Ogun State,” he said.

In his welcome remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, praised teachers for their role in nation-building and assured them that the government remains committed to their welfare and professional growth.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Apostle Abiodun Sanyaolu, and his counterpart at the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, congratulated Ogun teachers on the occasion and urged them to embrace collaboration, continuous learning, and global best practices.

They described teachers as the “silent architects of progress and torchbearers of civilisation,” commending Governor Abiodun for making education a key driver of transformation in the state.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Sewakanu Oladipupo, and the President of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Comrade Felix Agbesanwa, hailed the state government’s investments in education, including the provision of digital classrooms and training programmes.

They, however, called for additional incentives such as support for families of teachers who die in active service, education trust funds for out-of-school children, and the introduction of E-lesson notes to align with emerging trends in the sector.
