Nurses Issue Seven-Day Strike Notice to FG Over Welfare and Working Conditions

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM-FHI) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government, demanding improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for nurses across the country.

The notice, signed by National Secretary Enya Osinachi and released by the association’s President, Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan, was made public in Abuja on Monday. It follows the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, which reportedly received no meaningful response from the Federal Government or the Federal Ministry of Health.

According to the association, the strike is set to begin at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, and will involve a complete withdrawal of services across all Federal health institutions. Nurses nationwide have been instructed to fully comply and show solidarity.

NANNM-FHI emphasized the vital role nurses play in the healthcare system, stating that they contribute 60 to 70 percent of hospital services. The association argued that such an essential workforce deserves proper recognition, fair treatment, and significantly improved welfare packages.

The union also firmly rejected a circular issued on June 27 by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, calling for its immediate reversal. It demanded adjustments to allowances, including shift duty, call duty, and retention incentives.

Following an emergency National Executive Council meeting held on July 10 in Abuja, NANNM-FHI reiterated the importance of proactive engagement with the government to address these pressing concerns.

The association called on the Federal Government to prioritize the well-being of nurses, warning that failure to act could further jeopardize healthcare delivery in federal institutions. A supported and fairly treated nursing workforce, it stressed, is crucial to sustaining quality healthcare and public health outcomes nationwide.
