INTERNATIONAL PRESS WEEK 2025: NUJ SET TO CELEBRATE PRESS FREEDOM, HONOUR EXCELLENCE IN GOVERNANCE AND JOURNALISM

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is proud to announce its annual celebration of International Press Week, taking place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the prestigious Barcelona Hotel, Abuja. The event will commence at 5:30 PM in the hotel’s grand banquet hall and is expected to be a remarkable occasion.

This year’s celebration is dedicated to honoring the men and women who diligently serve in the noble profession of journalism. In addition to recognizing journalistic excellence, the event will also spotlight individuals across various sectors of governance and socio-economic development whose entrepreneurial and policy contributions have left significant footprints on the Nigerian landscape.

The NUJ emphasizes that the role of the press remains central to democratic development. In many societies, a free and vibrant media serves as a true barometer of democracy. As often stated, “If the press is not free, then society is in shackles.” Accordingly, the Press Freedom Awards go beyond mere celebration—they seek to draw attention to systemic barriers and institutional constraints that hinder the free operation of the media in Nigeria.

Reflecting this mission, the Union has extended invitations to key state officials, policymakers, and stakeholders whose duties intersect directly with the media and information landscape. Their presence underscores the importance of fostering an environment where press freedom is protected, and accountability is institutionalized.

A major highlight of the evening will be the Good Governance Awards, designed to assess and encourage transparency and accountability among public office holders. These awards not only serve as recognition for exemplary leadership but also aim to foster a spirit of healthy competition among political leaders and business executives. Ultimately, the initiative hopes to inspire active citizenship by educating Nigerians on the importance of holding their leaders accountable.

Speaking ahead of the event, Alhassan Yahya, National President of the NUJ, stated:

“Press freedom is a catalyst for good governance, and good governance ensures the dividends of democracy are delivered to citizens in real terms. Despite the numerous challenges confronting journalists in Nigeria today, the NUJ remains unwavering in its commitment to ethical journalism and upholding the highest standards of professionalism.”

In line with the celebration’s core themes, the NUJ will present several distinguished awards across various categories, including:

  • Defender of Press Freedom Award

  • Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Good Governance Award

  • Peacebuilding and Rural Transformation Award (with a focus on infrastructure development)

  • Touchbearers Award, which honours journalists who continue their work despite facing threats, harassment, or intimidation

This year’s International Press Week celebration promises to be an unforgettable gathering of media professionals, policymakers, civil society actors, and citizens united by the common values of truth, transparency, and democratic progress.

All media organizations, stakeholders, and the general public are cordially invited.
