FG Releases 8-Month CATA Payment to Academic Staff in Tertiary Institutions

FG begins payment of January–August 2026 CATA as government moves to fulfil 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement

The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of eight months of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to eligible academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The payment covers the period from January to August 2026 and is being implemented as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to honouring its agreements with academic workers and improving staff welfare in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, disclosed this after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation, describing the release of the funds as evidence of the government’s commitment to implementing approved agreements and prioritising the welfare of education personnel.

Dr. Alausa said the payment was being made in accordance with the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN-ASUU) Agreement.

He stated that federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education had been notified to commence payment to eligible academic staff.

The Minister further disclosed that the Federal Government was also making arrangements for the payment of the corresponding allowance to non-academic staff, with funds expected to be released within the coming weeks.

He reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of education workers, upgrading infrastructure and enhancing the overall quality of education as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Federal Ministry of Education reiterated that the government would continue to pursue the effective implementation of approved interventions and agreements designed to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector.

The release of the CATA funds is expected to provide financial relief to academic staff across federal tertiary institutions and reinforce the government’s efforts to address welfare-related concerns within the education system.
