As the race to the Awujale stool intensifies, Prince Olaseni Samsideen Ottun, a banker, consultant, and corporate leader, has called for a youthful and forward-looking monarch to succeed the late Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, GCON.
Ottun, a member of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, told journalists in Ijebu-Ode on Monday that Ijebuland deserves a king who combines vision with energy. He argued that a candidate between 45 and 55 years of age would be best suited to provide longevity and vibrancy.
“The next Awujale must be young, dynamic, and progressive,” he said. “History shows that long and impactful reigns, like that of Oba Adetona, leave lasting legacies. A youthful monarch will inspire innovation, embrace technology, and carry Ijebuland into the future.”
Ottun noted that Oba Adetona’s early ascension proved the enduring value of youth, as his reign became one of the most transformative in Nigeria’s traditional institution.
He emphasized that the stool demands more than wealth or status, insisting that the next Awujale must possess integrity, courage, and a deep commitment to unity and cultural preservation. “The Awujale must not be a moneybag or someone who would compromise the dignity of the throne,” he added.
On the succession process, Ottun explained that under the 1957 Western State Chieftaincy Declaration, the turn has come to the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, which will nominate candidates for consideration by the Odis and final decision by the 13 kingmakers.
He also commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for providing a level playing field, describing him as “a prince who understands the weight of rulership and has shown his commitment to Ijebuland through road projects and support for the Ijebu Traditional Council.”
“The next Awujale must embody honour, tradition, and responsibility,” Ottun concluded. “Ijebuland deserves nothing less than the best.”
