Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has challenged opposition politicians to acknowledge what he considers the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that political differences should not prevent them from recognising policies they believe are beneficial to Nigeria.
Wike spoke on Wednesday, October 14, during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, where political leaders and other stakeholders gathered ahead of the 2027 general election.
Despite identifying himself as a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former Rivers State governor defended his support for Tinubu, maintaining that party affiliation should not stop politicians from assessing government policies on their merits.
He rejected opposition criticisms portraying the administration as lacking direction, arguing that Tinubu had demonstrated a willingness to confront difficult national challenges that previous administrations had struggled to resolve.
On security, Wike expressed confidence in the administration’s ability to address insecurity and pointed to the proposed establishment of state police as a reform that could strengthen security management across the country.
The state police proposal, however, remains a subject of national debate, with discussions focusing on constitutional safeguards, funding, accountability and the balance of authority between federal and state governments.
Wike also challenged members of the presidential campaign council to justify their appointments through measurable political results in their respective areas of responsibility, rather than relying solely on their positions within the campaign structure.
His remarks came at an inauguration attended by political figures from different party backgrounds, including Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The Media and Publicity Team of the Forum of Chief Executives of Federal Parastatals (FORCEPA), in its review of the event, identified Wike’s intervention as one of the notable contributions to discussions on governance, political competition and national development.
The forum said public assessments of government performance should be guided by verifiable policies, measurable outcomes and the experiences of Nigerians across different sectors.
Wike’s comments add to the political debate ahead of the 2027 elections over the Tinubu administration’s record, the role of opposition parties and the place of cross-party political alliances in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
