The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun-East Independent Chapel, has congratulated the Ogun State Council Chairman, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, on the successful fulfilment of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola’s commitment to provide a new bus for the state council.
The Chapel described the presentation of the brand-new 18-seater Toyota HiAce bus to the Ogun NUJ as a significant institutional milestone capable of strengthening the Union’s operations and mobility across the state.
In a statement signed by the Chapel Chairman, Comrade Oluseun Oduneye, and Secretary, Olufunmilayo Suleodu, the Chapel said the development demonstrated the importance of constructive engagement between the NUJ leadership and stakeholders who recognise the role of journalism in society.
The Chapel recalled that Senator Adeola made the commitment during his interaction with journalists at the Iwe Iroyin Press Centre, Abeokuta, where he presented his development agenda and pledged support for the Union.
During the engagement, Adeola also urged journalists to hold him accountable for commitments made before them, stressing the responsibility of the media to document public promises and return to ask questions about their implementation.
The subsequent presentation of the bus, according to the Chapel, has given practical expression to one of the commitments made during that engagement.
The Ogun-East Independent Chapel particularly commended Olanrewaju for his leadership and efforts to articulate the needs of journalists and the institutional requirements of the state council.
It said the acquisition of the bus should be viewed beyond the provision of a vehicle, noting that improved mobility could assist the NUJ in attending official engagements, facilitating programmes and supporting journalists in carrying out professional assignments across Ogun State.
The Chapel also appreciated Senator Adeola for responding to the identified need and fulfilling the commitment made to the Union.
It recalled the senator’s description of the media as a partner in progress during his interaction with journalists, as well as his call for journalists to monitor government promises and performance.
According to the Chapel, the development further demonstrates the value of sustained engagement between the NUJ and individuals, institutions and other stakeholders whose interventions can contribute to strengthening journalism.
While celebrating the new bus, the Chapel called for more interventions and support for the Ogun NUJ, particularly in areas that can improve journalists’ welfare, professional development, working conditions and institutional capacity.
The Chapel congratulated Olanrewaju and the entire Ogun NUJ family on the milestone and expressed the hope that the bus would be deployed effectively for the benefit of the Union and journalists across the state.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives of the Ogun State Council aimed at promoting professional journalism, journalists’ welfare and stronger grassroots reporting across Ogun State.
