The Lagos State Government has renewed its call on residents to actively participate in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, urging every household and community to contribute to building a cleaner, healthier and flood-free state.
The government said achieving a cleaner Lagos requires the collective efforts of residents, stressing that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility rather than the duty of government alone.
According to the state government, dedicating a few hours on Saturday to sweeping streets, clearing blocked drains and disposing of refuse through approved waste management channels can significantly improve public health and environmental safety across communities.
Officials noted that cleaner streets and properly maintained drainage systems would help reduce flooding during the rainy season, minimise the spread of diseases and create a safer environment for families and businesses.
“Imagine waking up on Monday to streets free of litter, gutters flowing without blockage, cleaner air and a healthier environment for our children. That future doesn’t begin with someone else—it begins with each of us,” the government stated.
Residents were encouraged to clear refuse around their homes and neighbourhoods, remove debris blocking drainage channels and ensure that waste is disposed of only through authorised collection systems.
The government explained that every clean street, every cleared gutter and every properly disposed bag of waste contributes to protecting lives, preserving infrastructure and enhancing the overall quality of life in Africa’s largest city.
“A cleaner Lagos is not the government’s responsibility alone. It is a shared responsibility. When millions of residents each do a little, together we achieve a lot,” the statement added.
The Lagos State Government therefore appealed to community associations, market leaders, youths, traders, landlords and residents to embrace the sanitation exercise as a civic responsibility capable of transforming neighbourhoods across the state.

Residents were also encouraged to mobilise friends, neighbours and family members to participate, saying sustained community involvement remains key to achieving the vision of a cleaner, healthier and more resilient Lagos.
