KWASU Researchers Secure TWAS-UNESCO Grant and ₦83 Million National Research Fund Awards

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has recorded another major milestone in its quest for academic excellence and global relevance as four of its research teams secured highly competitive grants from international and national funding bodies valued at more than ₦150 million.

The breakthrough further reinforces the university’s growing profile as a centre of research, innovation and knowledge-driven development.

At the international level, a research team led by Dr. Bolatito Eunice Olanipekun as Principal Investigator secured a prestigious $43,913 research grant from TWAS-UNESCO, one of the world’s foremost organisations supporting scientific advancement and capacity building in developing countries.

The award places KWASU among a select group of institutions benefiting from global research funding aimed at addressing critical developmental challenges through innovative scientific inquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The university also achieved remarkable success at the national level as three separate research teams emerged among beneficiaries of the 2025 National Research Fund (NRF) Grant Scheme, securing a combined ₦83,025,900 for various research projects.

Under the NRF programme, the research team led by Dr. Abdulwaheed Musa received ₦37,590,000, while another team headed by Dr. Kehinde Peter Alabi secured ₦25,000,000. A third team led by Dr. Khafayat Yetunde Olatinwo was awarded ₦20,435,900.

The grants are expected to support innovative research initiatives capable of contributing to national development, scientific advancement and practical solutions to societal challenges.

Presenting the award letters to the successful researchers, the Vice-Chancellor of KWASU, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, congratulated the recipients for bringing honour to the institution through their outstanding achievements.

He described the success as a testament to the university’s commitment to promoting impactful research, innovation and academic excellence.

Professor Jimoh noted that the grants would not only strengthen the university’s research output but also enhance its visibility within the global academic community.

According to him, the achievement demonstrates the confidence reposed in KWASU scholars by reputable funding organisations and reflects the quality of research being conducted within the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor further urged the beneficiaries to see the awards as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to knowledge creation and societal development.

He encouraged them to mentor younger academics and early-career researchers, stressing that building a vibrant research culture remains critical to sustaining the university’s success in attracting competitive grants and international collaborations.

Professor Jimoh expressed optimism that the accomplishments would inspire other members of the academic community to pursue innovative research capable of attracting external funding and generating solutions to pressing local and global challenges.

The latest funding success adds to a growing list of academic and research achievements recorded by Kwara State University and underscores the institution’s determination to strengthen its position as a leading centre for teaching, research and innovation in Nigeria and beyond.
