The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC),
Bolaji Abdullahi, has expressed concern over what he described as a pattern of political developments capable of weakening opposition parties across Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on a current affairs programme, Abdullahi suggested that recent crises within several parties reflect broader challenges within the country’s political landscape, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
According to him, developments affecting parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and now the ADC, point to growing instability within opposition platforms.
“What we are seeing across parties raises concerns about the future of multiparty democracy if not carefully addressed,” he said.
ADC Crisis and Political Dynamics
Abdullahi noted that the leadership issues within the ADC, including disputes involving factional interests, should be viewed within the wider context of political realignments and increasing competition among parties.

He explained that the party’s rising profile in recent months has drawn significant attention, especially following the defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, which has reshaped alignments within the opposition space.
According to him, the development has positioned the ADC as a growing force, while also contributing to internal and external pressures on the party.
Growing Support Base
Despite the challenges, Abdullahi maintained that the ADC continues to attract new members, reflecting public interest in alternative political platforms.
He disclosed that over a million Nigerians have reportedly aligned with the party, indicating what he described as a demand for broader political participation and new governance options.
Concerns Over Governance Priorities
The ADC spokesperson also called for greater focus on governance issues, noting that national challenges such as insecurity and economic pressures require sustained attention.
He referenced recent incidents in parts of the country, stressing the need for responsive leadership and policies that directly address citizens’ concerns.
Judiciary and Democratic Process
On the role of the judiciary, Abdullahi acknowledged varying public opinions but expressed confidence in the courts as key institutions in safeguarding democratic processes.
He noted that judicial oversight remains essential in resolving political disputes and ensuring fairness within the system.
Call for Engagement and Stability
Abdullahi urged stakeholders to prioritise political stability and strengthen democratic institutions, emphasizing that a healthy opposition is vital for accountability and good governance.
He reiterated that the ADC would continue to participate in the democratic process while advocating for inclusiveness and respect for multiparty engagement in Nigeria.
