President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has firmly stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) does not seek to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, stressing that democracy thrives on credible opposition and healthy competition.
Speaking at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagle Square, Abuja, the President said the APC remains committed to strengthening democratic values while consolidating its “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“Let me reiterate, especially to those who often misunderstand us: we do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition. I believe in a credible opposition—one that can challenge, question, and help refine policies,” Tinubu said.
The President described the convention as a defining moment for both the party and Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing that unity—not numerical strength—remains the APC’s greatest asset.
“Our greatest strength has never been in our size, but in our unity. Political parties fail when ambition replaces discipline and when personal interests override collective goals,” he noted.
Tinubu urged party members to guard against internal divisions, warning that ego and selfish ambition could undermine the party’s long-term vision.
Tribute to Buhari, Party Founders

The President paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari and other founding members of the party, acknowledging their contributions to shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
He noted that the APC was built on sacrifice, courage, and a shared vision for national transformation, urging current members to sustain and deepen that legacy.

Reforms, Economy, and Governance
Highlighting achievements under his administration, Tinubu pointed to progress in infrastructure development, economic reforms, and social investment programmes.
According to him, the government has recorded improvements in key economic indicators, including declining inflation, increased investor confidence, and trade surpluses.
“We chose the path of reform because no nation rises by avoiding hard decisions. The sacrifices we make today are laying the foundation for tomorrow’s prosperity,” he said.
He also acknowledged ongoing challenges in the power sector and announced plans to strengthen electricity supply through initiatives such as the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO).

Responding to criticisms from opposition parties regarding the Electoral Act 2026, Tinubu defended the law, stating that it went through due legislative processes, including public hearings.
“The Act reflects our collective effort to strengthen our electoral system. Our commitment remains to uphold the rule of law and ensure credible elections,” he said.
The President called for greater inclusion of young people and women in governance, describing them as critical to Nigeria’s future.
“Young people are not just the future—they are the present. Their innovation and energy are essential to national development,” he said.
He also pledged to expand opportunities for women within the party and government, noting that inclusive leadership strengthens democratic institutions.
Tinubu urged delegates and party leaders to conduct themselves with integrity throughout the convention process, stressing that unity must prevail regardless of contest outcomes.
“At the end of this convention, our party must emerge stronger. Let no contest divide us. We are one family with a shared purpose,” he said.
Acknowledgment of Party Leaders
The President commended key figures involved in organizing the convention, including Aminu Bello Masari and Anyim Pius Anyim, as well as several state governors for their roles.
He also recognised Dapo Abiodun for overseeing the convention venue arrangements.
Tinubu concluded by urging newly elected party officials to lead with integrity and vision, expressing confidence that the APC would continue to expand its political base and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
“May God bless our great party and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
