Yusuf Buhari, son of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has shared reflections on how public attention around his family changed after his father left office.

In remarks circulating online, Yusuf recounted how the volume of calls and messages he received surged immediately after his father won the 2015 presidential election, but gradually declined once the family exited Aso Rock.
According to him, the shift highlighted how closely public interest is often tied to political power.
“After Goodluck Jonathan called to congratulate my dad, I used to receive up to 2,000 calls a day from different people — classmates, acquaintances, extended relatives and others,” he said.

He explained that calls would begin as early as 4 a.m., with many from people seeking reconnection or making various requests.
Yusuf noted that after President Buhari completed his tenure and handed over to President Bola Tinubu, the frequency of such calls dropped significantly.
“The calls reduced to about 100 a day. After my dad was buried, they dropped further to around 20 daily — mostly from siblings and business associates. The phones no longer ring,” he added.
He said the experience underscored a personal lesson about how influence and visibility often fade once public office is relinquished.
The remarks have since sparked conversations online about life after power and the nature of relationships built around political office.
