Nationwide Observance Sees Courts, Institutions Respect Armed Forces Remembrance Day as FG and Ogun Honour Fallen Heroes

Judicial and public services marked the solemn national observance; Shettima leads Federal tribute, Abiodun and Salako-Oyedele reaffirm support to families, traditional ruler offers prayers

Across Nigeria, institutions including courts and public offices observed the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Thursday, with many adjusting routines to honour the nation’s fallen servicemen and women. This day of solemn observance brought judicial, government and civic life to a reflective pause in recognition of the sacrifices that underpin the country’s unity and stability.

At the national ceremony in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces, veterans, and the families of those who paid the supreme price in service to the nation. Shettima emphasised that the patriotism and courage of those who served are foundational to Nigeria’s peace and sovereignty. He underscored that the Tinubu administration will continue strengthening military capacity and prioritising the wellbeing of serving personnel and their dependents.

The national wreath-laying at the National Arcade featured senior Federal officials, service chiefs, members of the National Assembly, and representatives of military families, underscoring nationwide solidarity in honouring heroic service.

In Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of families of fallen heroes and war veterans during the special parade and wreath-laying ceremony held at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. Represented by his Deputy, Engr. (Mrs) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the governor described the event as a moment of deep reflection and gratitude for the courage and sacrifices of Nigeria’s servicemen and women.

Governor Abiodun praised the professionalism and dedication of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, noting their continued role in ensuring peace and stability in Ogun State and beyond. He assured that his administration will continue to prioritise support for the families left behind in honour of their loved ones’ service.

The solemn observance concluded with prayers from the Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, who asked the Almighty to grant eternal rest to the fallen heroes, comfort their families, and bestow strength, wisdom and protection on all who continue to serve in defence of the nation.
