The Ogun State Government has commenced preparations to roll out the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP), with no fewer than 236,000 residents expected to benefit from the poverty alleviation initiative across the state.
The State Coordinator of the programme and Secretary to the Ogun State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting with members of the Council of Governor’s Liaison Officers (GLOs) at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Talabi explained that the programme, initiated under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is designed to stimulate grassroots economic activities by identifying local opportunities, empowering small-scale entrepreneurs and encouraging self-reliance in communities.
According to him, the RHWDP targets between 1,000 and 2,000 beneficiaries in each ward, making Ogun’s 236 wards a key part of the national plan to reach all 8,809 wards across Nigeria. He noted that the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030, through collaboration among the federal, state and local governments.
The SSG said Ogun State must take full advantage of the programme to create wealth, reduce multi-dimensional poverty and enhance security through improved production and sustainable livelihoods.
As part of the implementation process, Talabi tasked the GLOs to identify 1,000 active individuals per ward for enrolment, cautioning against favouritism, political bias or multiple registrations. He emphasised that the programme is open to all eligible residents, irrespective of party affiliation.
Responding on behalf of the liaison officers, the Chairman of the Council of GLOs, Hon. Tola Olutayo, assured the state government of their unwavering commitment to ensuring transparency and due diligence in the selection of beneficiaries.
Olutayo pledged that enrolment into the programme across the state’s 236 wards would be carried out fairly and without prejudice, in line with the objectives of the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme.
