TINUBU NOMINATES GEN CHRISTOPHER MUSA AS NEW MINISTER OF DEFENCE

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded the nomination of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, to the Senate as the new Minister of Defence, following the resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.

President Tinubu, in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and conveyed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced General Musa as his preferred replacement for the vacant Defence portfolio.

General Musa, who turns 58 on December 25, is a highly decorated senior officer who served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025 and is a recipient of the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering (2012).

Born in Sokoto in 1967, he completed his primary and secondary education in the state before proceeding to the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria. He began his military journey in 1986 at the Nigerian Defence Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science degree upon commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 1991.

Over his three-decade-long career, General Musa has held key operational and strategic military appointments, including:

  • General Staff Officer 1 (Training/Operations), HQ 81 Division

  • Commanding Officer, 73 Battalion

  • Assistant Director, Operational Requirements, Army Policy and Plans

  • Commander, Sector 3, Operation Lafiya Dole

  • Commander, Multinational Joint Task Force, Lake Chad Region

  • Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai

  • Commander, Nigerian Army Infantry Corps

He was appointed Chief of Defence Staff by President Tinubu in 2023.

In his letter, President Tinubu expressed confidence in General Musa’s capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture and lead ongoing reforms in the security sector.
