Tinubu Expresses Confidence in State Police, Says It Will Improve Nigeria’s Security

President tells APC governors he assured US and European leaders that party will deliver security reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed confidence that Nigeria’s security challenges would significantly improve with the establishment of State Police, saying the reform would strengthen internal security and enhance local response to crime.

Tinubu disclosed this on Thursday while addressing governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the party’s caucus meeting held at the State House, Abuja.

The President revealed that he had discussed Nigeria’s security architecture with leaders from the United States and Europe, assuring them that the creation of State Police would help address the country’s security concerns.

According to Tinubu, he is relying on APC governors to ensure the success of State Police once the initiative is fully implemented.

“I had a very long discussion with the US and European leaders. I was bragging to them that definitely we will pass a state police to improve security,” Tinubu said.

“They asked me if I’m confident, and I said, ‘Yes, I have a party to depend on. I have a party that will make it happen. And if at this level we fail, God forbid, we will not fail.’”

The President stressed that the commitment of APC governors would be critical to the effectiveness of State Police, noting that grassroots involvement remains key to addressing insecurity across the country.

Tinubu’s comments come amid renewed security concerns following recent kidnappings in parts of Kwara and Niger States, where gunmen believed to be bandits abducted worshippers during a church service and students from a school.

The incidents have reignited national debate over the need for decentralised policing and stronger collaboration between federal and state security structures.
