Former Imo State Governor and Senator Rochas Okorocha has been released on bail by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) following his arrest in Abuja on Monday night, October 12, over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
The Imo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, confirmed the arrest and subsequent release to Channels Television on Tuesday.
According to the police spokesperson, Okorocha was interrogated for about one hour before being granted bail. He was also directed to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning as investigations continue.
Reports indicate that the arrest followed the former governor’s alleged failure to honour earlier police invitations. He was initially invited to the Force Headquarters on September 2, but the appointment was reportedly rescheduled to September 8 at the request of his lawyers. He allegedly failed to attend on the rescheduled date.
The investigation is linked to a disputed document purporting to show that Okorocha won the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary for Imo West ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reportedly petitioned the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the document, maintaining that the official results submitted by the APC identified Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as the winner of the primary.
Okorocha had previously challenged reports that a court issued an arrest warrant against him, insisting through his media aide that no such order existed. The subsequent police arrest and release on bail are separate developments in the ongoing investigation.
The allegations against the former governor remain subject to investigation, and no finding of guilt is established by the arrest or the grant of bail.
