Police Bust Railway Vandalism Syndicate in Oyo, Recover Rail Tracks Worth ₦200 Million

Three Suspects Arrested as Stolen Railway Materials Allegedly Traced from Niger State

The Oyo State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against the vandalisation of critical national infrastructure with the arrest of three suspected members of a railway vandalism syndicate and the recovery of stolen rail tracks estimated to be worth about ₦200 million.

The suspects, identified as Waheed Ayinde (54), Muhammed Sani (27) and Hassan Ibrahim (22), were apprehended during an intelligence-driven operation carried out by operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit in the Gambari–Orile Igbon axis of Oyo State.

The operation also led to the recovery of a large quantity of railway tracks believed to have been illegally removed from rail infrastructure, as well as a HOWO truck with registration number CAL 972 XA, allegedly used in transporting the stolen materials.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the successful operation was made possible through credible intelligence supplied by vigilant members of the public.

According to him, the intelligence report alerted security operatives to the movement of suspicious railway materials within the state, prompting immediate surveillance and intervention by the police.

“Acting on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit intercepted the suspects and recovered vandalised rail tracks estimated at approximately ₦200 million,” Ayanlade disclosed.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the railway tracks were allegedly stolen from railway facilities located in Niger State before being transported to Oyo State.

Investigators believe the criminal network used Ogbomoso as a temporary storage and transit point where the vandalised materials were stockpiled before arrangements were made to move them to Lagos for eventual disposal.

The police spokesperson explained that the syndicate’s operation appears to have been carefully coordinated, involving the illegal removal, transportation and planned sale of railway infrastructure across multiple states.

“Our findings indicate that the stolen rail tracks originated from Niger State and were being transported to Lagos. The suspects allegedly used Ogbomoso as a temporary holding location before attempting to move the materials to their final destination,” he said.

The arrest comes amid growing concerns over the activities of infrastructure vandals whose actions have continued to pose significant threats to transportation networks, public safety and national economic development.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that vandalism of railway infrastructure not only results in huge financial losses but also compromises passenger safety and disrupts ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s rail transportation system.

The recovered railway materials are believed to represent a significant portion of the stolen infrastructure, potentially saving the government hundreds of millions of naira in replacement and repair costs.

Police authorities described the operation as a demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and community partnership in combating organised crime.

DSP Ayanlade assured residents that the Command remains committed to protecting critical national assets and ensuring that criminal elements operating within the state are brought to justice.

He disclosed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the syndicate’s operations and identify other collaborators involved in the theft, transportation and possible sale of the vandalised railway components.

“Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace and apprehend other members of the criminal network. The Command remains resolute in its determination to protect critical national infrastructure and ensure that those responsible for acts of economic sabotage are prosecuted,” he stated.

The police have also urged members of the public to continue providing timely information on suspicious activities, stressing that community support remains vital in preventing crimes targeting public infrastructure.

The latest arrest adds to a series of security operations across the country aimed at curbing the growing menace of infrastructure vandalism, which has affected rail lines, electricity installations, telecommunications facilities and other strategic national assets.
