Ogun Govt, SUBEB Urge Learners, Teachers to Embrace Excellence as Schools Resume Second Term

Education leaders reinforce commitment to quality teaching, discipline, and community support across public schools

The Ogun State Government and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) have intensified efforts to promote academic excellence, diligence, and professionalism among learners and teachers as public schools across the state resumed for the second term of the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sessions.

The Chairman of SUBEB, Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, urged pupils in public primary schools to remain focused and consistent in their studies, describing education as a sure pathway to lifelong success. He gave the charge during an Educational and Social Empowerment Programme organised by the Amuludun Grassroot Foundation at Olodo, Odeda Local Government Area.

According to Ifede, determination and discipline remain critical tools for achieving academic excellence. He also commended the convener of the programme, Ambassador Adewale Adeogun, for giving back to his roots and called on other well-meaning Nigerians to support educational development in their communities.

Ambassador Adeogun, who is also an Ex-Officio member of SUBEB, explained that he chose to mark his birthday through educational and social empowerment initiatives because education remains the strongest driver of national development and security. He disclosed that school uniforms and writing materials distributed at the event benefitted pupils across Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo States.

“A nation is better secured when its children are educated. This initiative is about restoring dignity, hope, and confidence in our children,” Adeogun said.

Meanwhile, during a two-day second-term resumption monitoring exercise in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Evangelist Ifede charged teachers to embrace professionalism and adopt effective teaching methodologies that would enhance learners’ ability to read, write, and communicate confidently.

“Basic education is very important. You are all trained teachers, with the least qualification being NCE. I encourage you to work harder this term,” he said, urging teachers to complete their schemes of work and adopt modern teaching techniques such as Jolly Phonics to strengthen pupils’ foundation.

He also called on Old Students’ Associations and School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) to complement government efforts in school development, noting that government alone could not shoulder the responsibility.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, charged learners across Ijebu, Remo, and Egba divisions to be diligent, disciplined, and committed to excellence, stressing that success and failure occur in stages.

Prof. Arigbabu expressed satisfaction with the high turnout of learners, neat appearance, punctuality of teachers, and cleanliness of school environments visited during his monitoring exercise. He reaffirmed the state government’s investment in rehabilitating and constructing classrooms, laboratories, and libraries to enhance effective teaching and learning.

“I’m really satisfied with what I’ve seen. Principals, teachers, and students were all on ground, and the environments were clean and orderly,” he noted.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Oluwatosin Oloko, advised learners to shun social vices and remain focused on achieving their dreams.

School administrators across the state, including headteachers and principals, appreciated the visits by government officials and assured them that identified gaps would be promptly addressed, while confirming that academic activities, including welcome tests, had commenced fully.

The highlights of the engagements included resumption monitoring, stakeholder interactions, and the distribution of school uniforms and writing materials to beneficiaries.
