…As Nigerians Mark 2026 Democracy Day Celebration

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to the principles of democratic governance, national unity, and the rule of law.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, June 12 remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, serving as a reminder of the courage, sacrifices, and resilience of citizens who fought for the sustenance of democratic governance in the country.

The Federal Government noted that the occasion provides an opportunity to honour the contributions of pro-democracy advocates whose efforts helped shape Nigeria’s democratic institutions and governance structure.

Reaffirming the administration’s dedication to democratic values, the Minister stressed that the government remains committed to promoting transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and adherence to the rule of law.

He stated that these principles remain critical to strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development.

The Minister also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures aimed at protecting lives and property across the country.

According to him, a secure and stable environment remains essential for democratic growth, economic progress, and national cohesion.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister stated.

He called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as a period for civic reflection, responsible engagement, and renewed commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence.

The Federal Government further urged citizens to recommit themselves to the values of patriotism, lawful conduct, and active participation in nation-building as the country continues its democratic journey.
